Why are peptides getting so much attention, and why are they called the miracle of modern cosmetics? We found out from Prim. Dr. Ivana Manola, MD, PhD, specialist in dermatology and venereology, owner of Polyclinic Manola in Zagreb, professor at the Medical School, and long-time lecturer at international aesthetic and dermatology congresses.
“Today, the focus is on a natural look - in aesthetics, dermatology, and cosmetics,” explains Dr. Manola.
“That’s why molecules have been developed to naturally stimulate the skin’s regenerative processes - and among them, peptides have taken the lead. Peptides stimulate biostimulation and the natural production of hyaluronic acid, resulting in fresher, more elastic, and youthful-looking skin. In short, they are small signaling activators that turn our rejuvenation clock backward.”
This combination delivers a dual effect - immediate and long-term.
“Hyaluronic acid provides an instant plumping effect - the lips appear fuller and more hydrated - while peptides work over time by stimulating the synthesis of collagen, elastin, and the skin’s own hyaluronic acid,” says Dr. Manola.
The result: smooth, elastic, and visibly fuller lips, with fewer expression lines - the so-called ‘barcode’ lines around the lip area.
“Peptides act as signaling molecules - they wake up our fibroblasts from their ‘winter sleep’ and stimulate them to produce new collagen and elastin cells,” explains Dr. Manola.
“They also increase hyaluronic acid levels, which hydrates and rejuvenates tired, dehydrated lips, while collagen and elastin restore volume and support.
What’s important to emphasize is that peptides aren’t just for the young - they work equally well on mature skin, as they naturally boost regeneration regardless of age.”
“Yes,” says Dr. Manola. “Peptides are safe for all age groups - from younger women just starting with makeup to those with more mature skin. After the age of 25, collagen synthesis begins to decline, and that’s where peptides help - providing a ‘boost’ and extra hydration for younger users, and restoring structure and density in later years.
Continuity is key,” she adds. “Peptides are not a passing trend - they’re a skincare habit that delivers visible results over time. That’s why we don’t say we used peptides, we say we use peptides.”
